Ecuador Volunteer Program - Fall 2011

We are looking for volunteers to work with Fundación Runa in Ecuador. Runa's unique combination of environmental, social and business allows volunteers to receive an amazing opportunity to participate in diverse areas supporting the growth of this budding social enterprise. Volunteers will receive an unique experience working alongside indigenous communities and our technicians while experiencing life in the jungle. Volunteer Activities:
  • Harvest guayusa Leaves
  • Plant guayusa trees
  • Deliver guayusa trees to farmers
  • Search for new guayusa mother trees in the jungle
  • Search for new trees/plants for agroforestry research
  • Work in the guayusa nurseries
  • Assist in research projects such as Agroforestry System Design, Community Development, and Agricultural Economics
  • Assist in Forest Conservation and Watershed project in Colonso forest
  • Give English and IT classes
Additional Activities
  • Take part in Guayusa Ceremonies
  • Tour of the guayusa nurseries and factory
  • Spanish Classes
Requirements
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Minimum 1 week commitment
  • Enthusiasm and interest in sustainable development work
  • Basic Spanish (lessons available)
  • Full travel & medical insurance
  • Necessary vaccinations
  • Necessary flights & visas

Living Arrangements

Volunteers and interns stay in "Casa Runa" in Tena. The house has 3 floors and sleeps 6-7 people. It is a 10 minute walk from the center of Tena in the barrio Las Hierbitas. The house has a kitchen, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, hot water and a balcony with a hammock and beautiful view of the river and the jungle. All bedding is provided. Volunteers and interns are responsible for their own food, but often cook communally.


Costs:

Program and accommodation..............$220/week (minimum 1 week)


These costs cover room and program fees in Tena, Ecuador. Travel to and from Tena is not included. Runa has a limited amount of scholarship funds available to go towards these costs if applicants have exhausted other funding opportunities.
